iPhone 6 Versus Android (Which do you like?)

By: Stan Washington
Date: 09/22/14

Here is an article I found written by Vera H-C Chan Senior Editor, Special Projects

Personally I own an Android simply because I am a techie. I notice most of the techies I know have
them as well. It did take some getting used to but when I did I enjoyed the interface. Here are my thoughts:

Do not think every app will be available. I had a Windows Phone (Yes I admit it) and I wanted to find a phone that would handle my contacts well. I jumped on the Android and I found my synch to Outlook was horribly broken. I had to purchase third party software in order to get my contacts.

WiFi versus Data Plan. I have a grandfathered "Unlimited" plan that I guard with my life. There are times in which my high speed has gone down and my phone was a savior. With a couple of screen touches, I was back up and running using my phone as a hot spot.  When I looked at the data analysis, I had used a significant amount of data.  Set notifications on you phone if you are trying to be frugal with your data plans.
Look for WiFi but proceed with caution. Public networks can be set up as something that looks very official but it is really a hub to grab your password and credit card information.

Business Over the Phone

By: Stan Washington
Date: November 1, 2013

I laughed as I tripped over a piece of archaeology in my driveway last month.  I picked up the relic and removed it from its bag. It was a phone book! It brought forth memories of when gas was 50 cents and travel agents existed.

This relic reminded me that the use of phone has changed over the years.

I actually had a conversation about home line versus cell phone versus business lines and here is what we ran into.

Are Toll Free Numbers still a viable option?
I would say it depends on the business. In the 80's, 800 numbers were a must for businesses, but so were the yellow pages. Ask yourself, does it save my customers money? Vanity numbers could be a draw and it depends on the size of your business whether you need to have a toll free number these days.

Should I get rid of my land line?
I have seen more of a movement to drop the expense of a land line and move to cell phone only business.  Again, it depends on how many people are in your business and do you need to share the phone number?

How do I get on the No Call List?
visit https://www.donotcall.gov/ and register your number.  Please note that you can only register so many numbers and there may be other limits.

How do you communicate with global clients?
Global reach can be expensive.  Many people are trading in their phones for web conference communication, but the meeting has to be set up in advance.  Voice over IP (VoIP) has many groups that offer free service as well as paid. I like VoIP but do you have to speak to the person? Can you go to web technology instead?

Should I use a virtual number?
Virtual numbers are nice especially when you don't have a brick and mortar business. They offer messaging services that can send the voice mail as an audio file to your e-mail. Is your business ready for multiple numbers? Do you have sales, support and other departments?

How should I use call routers and voice-mail?
Brevity is key!  It's annoying to call a business with a long message with twenty routing  options.  Keep messaging and routing options simple. Please drop the temptation to oversell while your client is on hold but mention upcoming products.

Take Three Tablets and grow your business!

Smartphone, Tablet, Mini Tablet, Android™, Windows™, Apple-OS™, Nexus 4™,  Nexus 7™,  Nexus 10™, , Microsoft Surface™,  IPad™,  IPad Mini™  and IPhone™ sounds like language from nerd weekly.  These clever gadgets have us mesmerized.  Last week I watched someone almost walk into traffic looking at their smartphone.

What makes us buy them? Is it status? Is it acceptance from our peers? I don’t know, but I really, really like my smartphone!

Okay I’m a “Droid” person. I like the number of apps developed for the Operating System and Google is trying to take over the world. BUT… I am interested in the new Surface Tablet.  Tablets are mostly used to read content or to use an app but they are rarely used to “produce” content.

Photoshop and other content development apps do not run on smartphones or tablets. Microsoft Surface is leaning toward being the only tablet that will run full blown applications to develop content.  It runs full versions of Office now, but I’m going to wait.

What do these clever little gadgets mean to your coaching business?

Apps I like for coaches
I won’t go into all 600,000 apps today, just a few that coaches’ access from their smartphones and tablets.

Tweet, Tweet, Tweet! Most of the coaches I know have a Twitter account and they have a following who desires to hear from them.  They attend conferences, workshops and other special gatherings and state meaningful observations to their crowd. Mobile twitter is a decent app for your following.

Mobile Facebook
Having a Facebook page for the business is vital. I have seen coaches respond the moment a person “likes” their page.  They use their smartphone to contact them with a “thank you” to increase the strength of the relationship.

Google GPS
Okay I tried to stay neutral but I love the Google Android “Free” GPS. It is by far the best I have ever used. Coaches rely on this great tool but it limits your conversation if you leave the voice commands on.

Cloud Print by Paulo Fernandes
I quickly added my 6 year old wireless printer (that is not ePrint enabled) to Google’s Cloud Print app.  Within seconds I was able to print from my phone to my office printer from anywhere in the world! To add more printers I simply log into the local wireless network and any printers that are available are added to my list. (Requires Google Chrome and Google Account)

Battery Notifier (Big Text) by SHKIL/LARRYVGS
Battery life is extremely important to me and this battery meter tells me when I am running low without having to go and check the status. It places a percentage number conveniently in my status bar on my phone and I can manage when to charge my phone.  By the way, I let my battery run all the way out before I plug it in, preserves its life.

Believe it or not, it’s a phone. Coaches please protect your phone with some outer skin that can take abuse. Public service… Be safe on the road! Many coaches have thrown away the blue tooth devices and have traded them in for the tangle-less headsets. Many of the phones are voice activated. I rarely use this feature out of courtesy to people around me and noise.

Show Phone Courtesy. Please figure out how to turn off your screen before holding the phone to your face to avoid touch tones! Mute your phone on conference calls. Stay in your car during that important call. I have seen coaches get a bit relaxed and continue to conduct business during their convenience store transaction.
